So yesterday, took 4.5 hours to install 45% of CS:S on my new laptop. Plugged into the modem directly at that. So today, I turn the comp on and on a wireless signal, it installs the other 55% in 45 min.
What the fuck Steam, what the fuck.

Fuck no, I was lucky if I was hitting 35-40 and that was for 5 seconds at a time, then it'd drop to like 5 haha

That's why I routinely back up my Steam folder to a spare hard drive. Yeah it takes up a few gigs, but it doesn't require an install at all. You can just copy it back and run it. Plus, the advantage is that you keep all your maps, mods, and models.

Even with a backup you still have to reinstall the game through Steam. I had to reformat my desktop 3 times in the past week and a half because of a problem with my installation CD.

That's the thing, you don't. If you backup your entire steam directory when you reformat, just install the steam client, then copy over the entire contents of the backup folder. It will put back all your games and mods. It's what I did last time and it saved me a ridiculous amount of time. You should consider it for the future.
